Founded in 1639, Newport is a treasure trove of historical sites to include hundreds of preserved colonial homes and buildings. In the late 1800's, America's wealthiest families chose Newport as their premiere resort destination. Today, visitors marvel at the magnificent Gilded Age mansion "Summer Cottages" they built before personal income tax was instituted in America. Many of these 40,000+ sq. ft. mansions are open for tours and are quite impressive. The most notable, Rough Point, was built by Doris Duke, the tobacco heiress.
A longtime home for the America's Cup and labeled as a "sailing capital of the world," Newport offers water activities along with numerous museums, galleries, festivals, historical sites and tours, cobblestone wharves, unique shops and the Tennis Hall of Fame. A "must do" activity is the Cliff Walk, a 3.2-mile walking path that winds between the sprawling lawns of the Newport mansions and the pounding surf of the Atlantic.
